The purpose of studying Buddhism is not to study Buddhism. It is to study ourselves.

Giving Back

Just look at my giddy face.  I'm not covering anxiety (bp of 100 over 58), I am really enjoying myself!  Why?  Because this fairly passive activity on my part means that someone else will live when they otherwise might die.

This is me this morning, giving blood for the very first time in my life.  You see, I always believed that because I had diabetes I was ineligible to donate.  WRONG.

I also figured that since I have also been "hard draw," that I would not be suitable for donating.  Again, WRONG.  I have one tiny vein that's the money shot, they found it, went in effortlessly and kids, it turns out I'm a natural "gusher."  Even though when I get blood draws for lab work the blood barely trickles into the test tubes.  Even though during routine labs my vein tends to be very hard to find and then rolls out of the way.  Not so with this donating procedure.  Truly, I am a natural!

My friend Doreen, who got me here in the first place and took me out for a fabulous lunch afterward, also informs me that being a bone marrow donor is just about as easy as this.  The technology has advanced mightily, and no longer do they need to bore into your bone to extract your marrow.  It's all done through a blood draw.  So, becoming a marrow donor is next on my list.

If you are relatively healthy, consider giving blood.  It is really so very easy --- really!  It is such a great feeling to know your actions save lives.  What a high I'm on today.
