That compares with a gap of 107-to-1 in 1990. If salaries of the average worker had kept up with that of a CEO, he or she would be making $110,136. Had the minimum wage risen at the same pace as CEO compensation, it would stand today at $23.01. The federal minimum wage of $5.15 has not risen since 1997."
We're merrily on our way to creating a society that is bound to be overthrown, as all unjust societys eventually are. Greed, corporate and otherwise, will be our undoing.
Last night I watched NOVA on PBS and saw the most interesting program on "Global Dimming." If you missed it, find out when it's showing in your area. It was a new concept to me: global dimming is a bonafide and demonstratable phenomena. Our particulate pollution is creating tiny water molecules in our clouds, tinier than normal ones, and they are reflecting sunlight back into the upper atmosphere and away from earth. The amount of sunlight hitting many parts of the world has been reduced 25% in the last 30 years! And the interplay between this and global warming, well, let's just say that our climate is much more volitile than we knew. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/sun/ Interesting questions and diliemmas about world wide pollution - how the pollution from North America and Europe probably had a major effect on the drought in Ethiopa back in the 80's (remember THAT one?), what are the implications of China and India's pollution as they seek to better the lives for their people? We truly are a tiny spinning ball in space, and the actions of one affect the lives of all.
Whether it be financial greed, ethnocentricity, power-hungry egos or just plain ignorance, the interests of a very few are making the lives of the multitudes a misery.
